ABOUT
My name is Jack Smith. I am a San Jose, CA native and a proud graduate of the University of Southern California.
After growing up in the Bay Area and calling games at Archbishop Mitty High School, I developed a passion for sports broadcasting. Ever since being unexpectedly cut from my high school baseball team, I’ve realized that my true calling is to tell the stories of the sports, teams and players I cover.
As the son of two hard-working lawyers, I learned the importance of setting a standard for both myself and my work. That’s the approach that I take into every broadcast I am a part of and each media product I create. I take pride in getting a little bit better at something every time I do it.
I invite the challenge to learn different sports, roles and places, which is why I was excited to travel to Virginia to work for the Fredericksburg Nationals in broadcasting and media relations, starting my professional baseball career nearly entirely across the country from home in California.
USC was the biggest launchpad I have experienced yet for my growth in the industry. As a sophomore, I joined both USC’s student radio station, KXSC, and USCFootball.com, USC’s dedicated 247 Sports site.
With KXSC, I hosted pregame, halftime and postgame shows for USC’s home football and basketball games and served as one of the main play-by-play broadcasters during USC’s baseball season. As a junior, I earned a spot as a play-by-play broadcaster for all major USC sports on KXSC, including football, basketball and baseball. I also called many of USC’s Olympic sports, as well as baseball, on television-style livestreams while working for Pac-12 Plus and, eventually, Big Ten Plus.
With USCFootball.com, I covered USC football on a daily basis, attending all practices and games, hosting the site’s “Instant Analysis” videos after press conferences and driving to Redondo Beach, CA to host and produce multiple podcasts each week. I also helped spearhead the creation of the “Dedeaux Download Podcast,” USCFootball.com’s first-ever USC baseball podcast and the only USC baseball podcast to routinely feature exclusive interviews with the Trojans’ head coach, Andy Stankiewicz.
In the summer leading into my senior year, I moved to Chatham, MA to work for the Chatham Anglers in the Cape Cod Baseball League as a radio play-by-play broadcaster and one of the co-directors of the media team across a 41-game summer collegiate season.
I then earned the opportunity as a senior to serve as one of the sports co-directors at KXSC and broadcast all 12 of USC football’s regular-season games, home and away. I also helped mentor younger student broadcasters while growing the station’s coverage of all other sports.
As a culmination of all of my work throughout college, I was awarded the 2025 Jim Nantz Award. The award, presented by the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA) and professionals in the industry, honors “the nation’s most outstanding collegiate sports broadcaster.”
